Les radicaux libres sont des molécules agressives responsables du processus d'oxydation des tissus qui endommage les cellules. Une peau saine contient des antioxydants qui la protègent en neutralisant les radicaux libres.

Dans l'épiderme, ces radicaux libres sont majoritairement générés par les rayons UV. Dans des conditions normales et avec une exposition limitée aux UV, les mécanismes de défense de la peau sont peu ou prou capables de gérer ces agressions. Cependant, si l'exposition est prolongée, ces mécanismes s'affaiblissent. La peau devient sensible et plus sujette à de nouvelles problématiques cutanées. Une exposition au soleil sans protection pendant plusieurs années entraîne des dommages chroniques induit par le soleil et, avec eux, un vieillissement prématuré de la peau. Les rayons UV peuvent être particulièrement dangereux pour les peaux hypersensibles. En effet ils pénètrent plus facilement la barrière cutanée (car altérée) et risquent d'aggraver l'hyper-réactivité des fibres sensorielles de l'épiderme.
